PSYCHOGEOGRAPHY

Since we were kids we were told that a specie characterizes its  habitat, but it wasn’t until 1955  when the Marxist theorist Guy Debord made us realized that in fact the habitat has the power to characterized, define and influence a specie’s development and emotions. Now we know that the physical form of the places where we live and grow have a big influence in the mentality of a mass and an individual itself. Picture number is situated in Edinburg, Scotland. This picture would be considered a psychogeographic photography. This image reflects the passing time through history.  On the corner, in the high mountain, we can see Queens Mary Castle in which the royal blood and high class society used to live. On the contrary the lower class was situated down the hills. This is an example of how location describes society. Being up will make the upper class feel powerful and being down the lower class will always feel looked down on and having that dream that they will never get to the top. Another characteristic of this image being psychogeographic is that with time, we see how the lower part developed into the modern city while the upper part just died when the monarchy disappeared. Now the upper part is seem as a historical place. The lower part developed into the heart and the center of the modern city since it has a more plane surface rather than a mountain and because the population that lived in the lower areas was bigger in quantity.

The second picture is consider a psychogeographic picture because it explain the attitude and behavior of the residents of Edinburg. Edinburg is consider a city one of the biggest city. It is the capital of Scotland but when I visited people acted different from how people of big cities like New York and London acted. People in Edinburg were friendlier and the moved slower. They were full of tourist like New York and London but they weren’t as impatient, aggressive or wanting to do everything fast. It is because of the location of the city. The city acts like a town because they are surrounded with nature. The is the beautiful mountain called the Arthur’s sit people go running and take their dogs out. There aren’t many modern buildings like in other cities. They are full of history and museums. Even if the size of the city is not small, it is comparably smaller than other cities. People are friendlier and there is a feeling of relaxation rather than a suffocation felt in other cities. The air is clearer and the color of the sky is brighter ever though it rains often. People here are very different than in other cities.

The third picture is based on Edinburg as well. It is a Vault in which it was discovered in 1985 that some of the poorest people lived there. These were dangerous people as well. Serial killers would hide in these vaults the bodies of people to make medical experimentation. This picture reflects and describe the type of people once lived here. It talks about their psycho and how their lifestyle made them go to the extreme in order to survive.
